Ditch these bad habits and save money plus improve your health

January 14, 2018

Do you have bad habits that you need to break up with?

Smoking, drinking, and partying are all things that need a serious reconsideration if you’re serious about changing your life. Not to say that you shouldn’t have fun in life, but there are better (and cheaper) ways to do it. Now these certainly aren’t easy habits to break, but with serious grit, determination, and support from family, friends, and possibly a physician, it’s possible.

  1. Stop smoking cigarettes and save $2,007 per year.

Smoking a pack of cigarettes per day at $5.50 per pack will cost you $2,007 per year; not to mention negatively impact your health.

  1. Ditch drinking beer and save $2,113 per year.

Drinking a six-pack of beer per day at $5.79 per pack will cost you $2,113 per year. If you want to save the dollar bills, consider lowering the amount you drink, reducing the number of days you drink, or stopping altogether.

  1. Quit vaping and save $700 per year.

Vaping will cost you around $700 per year figuring one bottle of eJuice per week, two coils per month, and one eVape device per year. Although vaping companies claim this is safer and cheaper than smoking, you are still allowing the addictive substance of nicotine into your body.

  1. Cut partying at the bar and save $3,016 per year.

Partying two nights per week at a bar having four, $6 drinks plus a $5 tip is $29 per night or $58 per week. This will cost you $3,016 per year.

  1. Stop pounding the soda and save $728 per year.

Are you one of those people that can’t function without your many Mt. Dews or Coke’s to get you through the day? At 6 cans per day or 3.5, 12-pack cases per week that cost $4, your soda habit is costing you $728 per year. If it’s the caffeine you need, consider free coffee at the office or even purchase caffeine pills. If it’s simply the habit, find something cheaper. Try water or water plus single use drink mixes.

  1. Ignore the fancy energy drinks and save $5,110 per year.

This one’s a personal pet-peeve of mine since I’m working with my husband to break this habit. If you’re like him, it’s a 4 can a day habit. At $3.50 per can, that’s a whopping $14 per day or $5,110 per year. Insert frustration here. What can we do with an extra $5k per year? A whole heck of a lot when you consider saving and investing. Although we’re debt-free and have significantly changed our spending habits, this one continues to be one of the last things we are working on. I’ll keep you posted on the progress 😉

Our bad habits are not just hard on our health, they are hard on our bank accounts and can hinder us from achieving our long-term goals. Gaining financial freedom isn’t for the weak. It takes hard work and dedication.
